The shoulder rotator cuff is a group of tendons and muscles in the main shoulder joint that are integral to shoulder movement. Repetitive or overuse can injure the rotator cuff, as well as an injury to the shoulder. Dr. Steven Struhl has extensive experience as an orthopedic surgeon, sports medicine surgeon and shoulder specialist, offering advanced options in rotator cuff tear treatment at his clinics in NYC and Westchester.

Causes and Symptoms of Rotator Cuff Injuries

The rotator cuff resides inside the main glenohumeral joint of the shoulder. The four muscles and their tendons that make up the rotator cuff are essential for stabilizing the main shoulder joint. The tendons connect the humerus (upper arm bone) with the scapula (shoulder socket). When a tendon in the rotator cuff detaches from the bone, it is called a rotator cuff tear.

Common causes of rotator cuff tears are repetitive motions and falling injuries. Repetitive overhead arm movement can lead to rotator cuff tears, especially in those 40 years of age or older. Trauma to the shoulder can also cause a rotator cuff tear. This includes landing on an outstretched arm or impact injuries. Symptoms of a rotator cuff tear include:

Treatment for rotator cuff tears depends on the patient and extent of the injury. Minor tendon tears can be treated with anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy, and more significant rotator cuff tears may require surgery.
